Breville BKC700XL Gourmet Single-Serve Coffeemaker with Iced-Beverage Function

Amazon.com Product Description
The best coffee is always the freshest coffee. That's why it makes no sense to brew by the pot: by the time you get around to drinking most of the joe, it's been sitting in a carafe (or worse, on top of a burner), going more bitter and stale with each minute. The Breville single-cup brewer takes a different approach. It makes coffee one cup at a time, so each cup tastes as fresh as the first one in the pot. The unit's LCD control panel includes a digital clock with auto on/off time, five brew strengths, and variable brew temperature, which allows for customizing each cup--perfect for households or dinner parties in which everyone likes a different brew. Best of all, the brewing process is very, very difficult to mess up. The Breville's patented "showerhead" sprays a precisely calibrated amount of water through a "K-Cup," a technology made famous by Keurig's single-cup brewers, using temperature and pressure designed to extract the maximum amount of flavor from the grounds. The unit provides a sample variety pack of single-use K-Cup coffee pods, including cocoa and tea, as well as a reusable My K-Cup that accepts any variety of ground coffee. The included My K-Cup and measuring spoon conveniently store in the brewer's top compartment. Furthermore, the machine comes with an iced-beverage function that dispenses a concentrated 3-1/2-ounce shot of tea or coffee. Simply dilute with ice and add water, milk, or sweeteners for an iced tea or coffee. Other highlights include low-noise pump technology for quiet brewing, a removable 60-ounce water tank that can brew up to 10 cups before it needs refilling, and a charcoal water-filtration system to reduce impurities for optimal taste. Made from heavy-duty stainless steel in a sleek, stylish design, the 1500-watt single-cup coffeemaker measures approximately 14-3/4 by 12-3/4 by 16-3/4 inches.

Review 1:
This is a replacement for a Keurig B-60 which we certainly enjoyed and was a very good machine. One of the reasons we chose the Breville is that our kitchen wall cabinets are 17" over the counter-tops. Could not leave the Keurig under the cabinets while making coffee, as the top would not open far enough to insert a K-Cup; not a problem with Breville, as the height of this unit is less. I know that's not an issue for most people but it was just a pain.

Anyone who owns a Keuring knows the noise they make, they sound like a B-52 coming in for a landing, surprisingly the Breville is quiet, really quiet! Now the dog can sleep through my morning coffee making ritual. This comes with a nice hidden storage space on top where the included reusable K-Cup and measuring scoop are stored, nice feature, if like me, you always misplace goodies like this.

The unit is obviously stainless steel, it is attractive in the kitchen---coffee makers are normally one of those things we leave on the counter all of the time. It dispenses four different cup sizes plus has an iced beverage setting, which I'll look forward to using this Summer. I would think that all K-Cup makers, make an equally good cup of coffee as they all work basically the same, could not make that an advantage for this maker. There is attention to detail, like the indicator on the cup platform to let you know if it needs to be emptied, the storage compartment, lighted water container etc.

Programming is intuitive. Setting the time for it to turn on and off, water temp., cup size and current time is a cake-walk. All controls are illuminated and easy to use. For some the price of this unit may be an issue, but when you consider it an appliance that gets used a lot and is left on the counter, the quality over other brands, the value is there! (Just made of cup of coffee while writing this, still blows me away just how quiet the Breville is).

I always get up in the morning several hours before my wife. I would make a pot of coffee, have several cups, it would then set there until she got up. Needless to say, what she got was not the greatest. Someone was talking about these K-Cup makers, I thought that would at least let her get a fresh cup when she got up.....so I bought one. Perfect! She became a happy camper first thing in the morning and we didn't have to dump coffee when I made too much----how sweet it is. Having a selection of different blends of coffee is nice too, everyone likes something different. The Keuring was used and used until we needed a replacement, certainly got my moneys worth. Went with this, and can say that there is value for the extra cost and we are more than pleased with the performance of the Breville. Once in a while I'll put a scoop of Folger's in the reusable K-Cup, and it is great tasting too, put a tea bag in and have a cup of tea.

I think you would be more than pleased with this coffee maker if you are looking for quality, ease of use, versatility and great looks. Every review should have something negative---well, here it is: The plug is three inches long, it has this do-nut hole to put your finger in to make it easy to remove from the wall plug, great idea, but it just makes it impossible to put the coffee maker close to the wall when the plug is behind it. A thoughtful idea and probably not a problem for anyone else----just happens, our maker sits in front of the plug. Pathetic I know, but, I just had to get it out!

If you do make this purchase I really hope that you are as pleased as we are and get equal enjoyment from using it.

Review 2:
I have been using a Keurig B70 for a couple of years. I was having issues with coffee grounds overflowing into my morning cup of joe (nothing wakes you up faster than choking on a mouthful of coffee grinds). I purchased this new unit because of the claim that it was quieter and has an iced tea setting. All I can say is...wow! This unit did not disappoint. It is whisper quiet compared to the other Keurig models. Now I'm not afraid to brew a cup early in the morning while others are sleeping. I am very happy with this upgrade.....and no more coffee grounds.

Review 3:
If you are trying to choose between the Keurig and the Breville, this review is for you. I now have experience with both and can tell you unequivocally that the Breville is the better machine.

I started a year ago with the top-of-the-line Keurig. It made an OK cup of coffee and got my family hooked on the single-cup concept. We cannot agree on what makes a good cup of coffee, so with the Keurig, we could each select our own. And, we could have fresh coffee, tea or iced beverage any time of day with no hassle. Before long, I had an entire cupboard dedicated to K-cups.

There were two problems: The coffee was OK but not great -- it lacked complexity and depth. You could get a strong cup of coffee by selecting the strongest roasts, but that produced a harsh coffee without any nuance. That is not a satisying cup of coffee. But worse, the stupid machine kept breaking down. It seemed to get confused and would freeze up. It said "brewing" but in fact, nothing was happening. At first, you could re-start the machine by unplugging it and "rebooting" it. Before long, that stopped being effective and I could find nothing to correct the problem.

I went through three Keurigs in less than one year. It was the same problem every time. Amazon was great and stood behind the machine, shipping me new ones. But with the warranty about to expire and the machine, once again, not working, I bit the bullet and went for the much more expensive Breville.

It's a great looking machine. It heats the water hotter and more consistently than the Keurig, which I realized immediately was the reason the Keurig coffee was only fair, not great. So the Breville does indeed produce a much better cup of coffee. And so far (after three months) it has not broken down. Each of the Keurig coffeemakers starting acting flaky within three months, so I'm taking this as a good sign and, with fingers crossed, believe that this will prove to be a reliable machine.

I've spoken with friends who have used Keurig for years without problems. I don't know why I have had such lousy luck with them. But I also have friends who have used both the Breville and the Keurig and, among those users, we all agree the Breville makes better coffee.

FOLLOW-UP It's been over 18 months and the Breville is still working fine.

Review 4:
I've been wanting a pod coffeemaker for some time now. I'm glad I waited to purchase this model. After having it only one day - I used it 6 times for both my daughter and I. The coffee strength is good for prepackaged k-cups and making my k-cups is easy. I ground my own coffee beans fine and weighed about 12 grams of the fine coffee into the mesh basket. I selected the 7.25 oz size and my coffee came out perfectly. I used the my k-cup for tea and hot chocolate too. For my tea, I opened 2 tea bags and finely ground the leaves and then placed them in the basket (basket about 1/2 full) and selected 7.25 oz and my tea came out awesome. I wanted more tea, and I used the same grounds but on the 5.25 setting, and it was another perfect cup! For hot chocolate (Godiva powder) I measured again about 12 grams of fine powder and selected 7.25 oz and again another perfect cup. I'm pleased with the quality of the taste of prepackaged k-cups and my experiences making my k-cups.

This product is very easy to use and it's quiet. The water heats up quickly and you have a cup of whatever you want in less than 20 seconds and clean up is easy. I like that I don't have the hassle of coffee filters, cleaning coffee pots and throwing away coffee I couldn't drink. I enjoy that my guests can choose what they want to drink and that there is always a fresh cup. The bonus is that this product looks great on my countertop. I own other Breville products and can say that their quality is definitely high end.

Review 5:
I researched for about a month or 2 before deciding on this machine. I watched video demonstrations and read just about every review posted on the web for just about every single serve brewer available for purchase. Functionally, this machine isn't very different than the keurig b70. After watching some video demos I believe this machine is a little quieter and also has an iced coffee function. The biggest differences between the two machines are the cost and build. The keurig is mainly plastic and the breville is mainly stainless steel. It seems I've read about a high failure rate for most of these types of single serve brewers. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and watched the breville troubleshooting videos on YouTube. Hopefully with proper maintenance and care this machine will last. As other reviewers have reported, some k-cups in general are on the weak side no matter which brewer you choose so I brew all medium blends at the smaller cup size and steer clear of lighter blends altogether. Coffee from this machine smells great, has great flavor (if you choose a k-cup you like) is piping hot and brews super fast. And it's surprisingly quiet. This is a plus with the new baby. Overall I'm very pleased with the purchase. I think the b70 can brew iced coffee even without the added feature but my personal belief is that if the cost is cheap and the feel is cheap, than it's cheap. sometimes you get what you pay for so I don't mind dishing out the extra cash for the solid feel, extra iced coffee feature (which my husband and I live off of all summer) and quieter brewing. I also forgot to mention the my k-cup storage compartment. Its nice not to have to worry about keeping track of accessories. Oh, one additional reason I chose the breville is while reviewers of both brands complained of problems with their machines, it seemed to me that there were more positive experiences reported when dealing with breville customer service vs keurig. Just my opinion after months of reading. I'm sure both machines can produce a great cup of coffee. Happy shopping!
